According to reports from Sky Sports Italia, Birmingham City are set to launch an ambitious swoop for Torino midfielder Afriyie Acquah.
Birmingham City managed to avoid relegation last season by the skin of their teeth but despite the terrible campaign, the Blues head into the upcoming season with a lot of optimism under the wily old manager Harry Redknapp.
Redknapp is an expert at getting teams promoted into the Premier League and the 70-year-old is now looking to take Birmingham into the top flight once again following the club enduring years of mediocrity in the Championship.
Achieving such a feat will be easier said than done though, the level of the competition in the Championship is fiercer than ever and as a result, Birmingham will need to strengthen their squad in order to be able to claim one of the playoff spots in the table.
Redknapp has focused his attention towards strengthening his backline this summer and invested significantly on acquiring the services of the duo of Marc Roberts and David Stockdale.
Now the Blues boss seems to have set his sights on signing a new defensive midfielder and according to reports from the Sky Sports Italia, the Championship outfit are currently plotting an ambitious move for Afriyie Acquah.
Acquah is currently plying his trade for Serie A side Torino and has impressed during his two seasons so far at Turin. However, the 25-year-old was limited to only 20 league appearances last term and there is widespread speculation that the Italian outfit could sell him for the right price.
Due to his apparent availability, Birmingham have now expressed an interest in signing Acquah and reports claim that the Blues are ready to splash as much as £7.2million in order to sign the Ghanaian international.
Acquah is certainly a very good player who would be able to deal with the rigours of the English Championship and securing his signing would represent a major coup for the Blues in their hopes of earning promotion next season.
