Arsenal are ready to make a sensational bid for Real Madrid starlet Marco Asensio of about £72 million, reports suggest.
After Arsenal failed to secure the signature of Thomas Lemar from Monaco, it is believed that the Gunners are looking at alternative targets and are now interested in signing Real Madrid star Marco Asensio in what could potentially be their biggest transfer to date.
Arsenal were linked to Lemar throughout the summer without much success and manager Arsene Wenger, admitted earlier this week that the deal for the Frenchman was finally dead.
Consequently, it is now believed that the Gunners have turned their attention to the Real Madrid wide-attacker Asensio and are intending to trigger the Spaniard’s £72 million release clause.
Asensio has impressed for the European and Spanish Champions, Real Madrid, in recent seasons and seems to have earned the faith of manager, Zinedine Zidane, making 23 league appearances for the Los Blancos last season despite having to compete for the starting places with the likes of Gareth Bale and Isco.
The 21-year-old has already won over the Santiago Bernabeu faithful with a couple of sensational strikes against fierce rivals Barcelona over two legs in their recent Spanish Super Cup games as well as due to his contribution in Madrid’s fine campaign last term.
Asensio has been tipped as the star for future by both the Madrid fan-base and Zidane and considering this fact, it looks unlikely that Arsenal will be able to secure the signature of the youngster as the English side are struggling to win anything at the moment.
With the future of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Alexis Sanchez undecided, a new winger seems to be on the top of Arsene Wenger’s wish list for the summer but Asensio is certainly out of their reach.
