Bayern Munich are looking to provide Manchester United competition for the signature of Nicolas Otamendi
It has been clear for quite a while that Manchester United are eyeing a move for a central defender but surprisingly enough, their pursuit has still not yet come into fruition.
There were widespread reports that United were pursuing the services of Real Madrid star Sergio Ramos but it is looking increasingly likely that the Red Devils will be missing out on the Spanish defender as he has reportedly agreed to sign an extension to his contract at the club.
As a result, United have been forced to focus on targets elsewhere and it had been claimed recently that the Red Devils reignited their interest in signing Valencia star Nicolas Otamendi.
Otamendi has been a long time target for United but with the Red Devils pursuing the services of Ramos, they had cooled their bid for the Argentine defender.
Having missed out on Ramos though, United have now refocused their interest in signing Otamendi and there were even claims that the Red Devils had decided to activate his release clause which was believed to be in the region of around £35million.
Such claims have since been refuted but United still remain in the hunt to sign Otamendi and manager Louis van Gaal is still hopeful of securing the services of the defender.
However as a big blow to the Premier League giants’ hopes of recruiting Otamendi, it has now been revealed that even Bayern Munich have joined in the race to sign the Argentine international.
There is a lot of speculation regarding the future of Mehdi Benatia at the Allianz Arena and it is believed that manager Pep Guardiola is open to allowing the Moroccan international to leave if he can bring in an able replacement.
Therefore, Guardiola has been scouring the market in search of a new central defender and it can now be revealed that the Spanish manager is planning a swoop for Otamendi.
Reports in Germany have stated that Bayern are keen on signing Otamendi and have already contacted the defender’s representatives over a potential move.
However, Bayern have not yet launched an enquiry to Valencia as of yet and the transfer coming into fruition is still miles apart.
Bayern are hopeful of landing Otamendi for a fee lower than his stated release clause of around £35million and it will be interesting to see which team wins the battle to secure the services of the much coveted defender.
