France national team forward Kylian Mbappe has revealed that he helped convince his international teammate, Ousmane Dembele, to join Barcelona.
Dembele completed a whopping £105 million move from Borussia Dortmund to Barcelona earlier on in the summer but it did look for a while that the transfer may not come into fruition after a long and drawn saga, which saw the youngster go on a strike against his former club in hopes of forcing the switch to the Nou Camp.
Eventually though, Dembele ended up completing the transfer to Barcelona and now Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe has revealed the role he played in helping the Catalan giants sign his French international teammate.
Mbappe has revealed in a recent interview how he advised Dembele to keep calm during the periods when the transfer looked dead and added that the move to Barcelona is a great opportunity for his compatriot to flourish alongside illustrious names such as Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.
Speaking to Foot Mercato, Mbappe said, “We discussed it and he asked what I thought about it. I told him to go because it is a great opportunity for him.
“He can really become a great player playing with Messi and Suarez in attack. He will really progress. His talent is already incredible, but he can still reach a new level. That he can fulfill his dreams is what I wish for him. He managed to do it. In addition he is a friend, so it’s all good.
“We have this passion for football. All that talk about prices or whatever, it does not concern us. What concerns us is just on the pitch. We want to play as we have always played since we started in football, both of us in our home cities. It’s not a matter of value or principle, it’s just a matter of passion, feeling, that love of the game.”
Dembele was very impressive during his single season for Dortmund and his fantastic dribbling ability as well as skill on the ball was a feast for fans of the Bundesliga side. In addition, the French international has one of the best first touches in the game and such variety of skills, makes him a nightmare for full-backs.
Although, the 20-year-old’s decision-making is something that might remain wanting, he is still young and will improve in that aspect of game with age and his ability to go past players makes him a perfect replacement for Neymar, who moved from Barcelona to PSG for aworld record fee this summer.
Should Dembele keep growing as a player at the current rate, the £105 million plus add-ons Barca splashed on him might start looking measly soon.
