Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is reportedly disappointed with Karim Benzema’s lack of goals and is interested in selling the forward to bring in Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann as his replacement.
Benzema has failed to get goals regularly for Real Madrid in recent seasons and was even booed by some sections of the Santiago Bernabeu supporters during the Los Blanco’s 2-2 draw with Valencia last week after failing to convert a host of good chances.
As a result, Real Madrid President Florentino Perez is believed to have gotten tired of the Frenchman’s profligate finishing and believes that the forward is no longer of the desired quality for the European and Spanish Champions.
Last season, Benzema was favored by Zinedine Zidane at the expense of Alvaro Morata, who found the back of the net consistently when he got the chance to feature. Despite playing fewer minutes for Real last term, Morata bagged 15 goals in the league, which was more than Benzema’s, who managed only 11.
Benzema had been known as a willing runner for the team and his work off the ball was believed to be the main reason for Cristiano Ronaldo’s ability to regularly bang in goals, which is why Zidane preferred the former French international.
However in recent seasons, Benzema’s work rate has noticeably gone down and the 29-year-old looks more lethargic during the games – which is certainly not a good sign considering his less than impressive record in front of goal.
It is believed that Perez was keen to replace Benzema this summer itself with the signing of Kylian Mbappe from Monaco, however PSG beat Real to the 18-year-old’s signature.
It is now believed that Real will raid local rivals Athletico Madrid come next season to sign Antoine Griezmann, who has a release clause of around £89 million, as a replacement for Benzema.
Perez is known to make transfer decisions in regards to the first team without considering his manager’s opinion, having previously sold the likes of Angel Di Maria and famously Claude Makelele and it would not be a surprise if Benzema departs as well without the consent of Zidane.
