Real Madrid are keen on acquiring the services of Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte after transfer window resumes in January, according to reports.
Laporte has been linked with a move to various elite clubs after impressing since making his debut for Bilbao as a teenager in 2012 and the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal have consistently been touted as a possible destination for the youngster.
Despite being only 23, the French defender has been playing at the highest level for more than four years now and having consistently produced impressive performances for the Basque club, it comes as no surprise that Real Madrid are now interested in signing the talented defender.
Madrid look seriously under strength in the defensive positions as manager Zinedine Zidane currently has only three seasoned campaigners in Sergio Ramos, Raphael Varane and Nacho at his disposal and the Frechman’s cover options in defence are players who are yet to feature consistently at the highest level.
While grooming young talent is a very noble approach, the lack of experience at depth might be a major problem for a club like Real Madrid as they are expected to win everything at all fronts.
Madrid may be able to cope for the time being but things will get tough during the latter half of the season when the team needs to negotiate a lot of games without too much resting time and therefore signing a quality player like Laporte in January will be a wise move for the defending European champions.
Laporte has the required experience of having played at the highest level and also the quality expected of a Real Madrid player. The aforementioned factors along with his young age make Laporte the ideal signing for Zidane.
However, acquiring the defender will not come cheap as Athletic are unwilling to sell their prized asset and Real might well have to pay the entirety of Laporte’s £57 million release clause in order to land him this winter.
