Chelsea ready to battle with Barcelona for Leverkusen wonderkid

Chelsea will have to battle with Barcelona to sign promising Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Atakan Akkaynak, according to reports.

Akkaynak has been impressing for the Bayer Leverkusen U-18 squads in recent times and as a result, he seems to have attracted the attention of various top clubs in Europe, with the likes of Chelsea and Barcelona said to be particularly invested in the talented youngster.

Barcelona have been allegedly been scouting the player for over a year now and will soon make a move in the upcoming transfer windows. The Catalans will however need to compete with the English Champions, Chelsea, who are also said to be ready to table a bid for Akkaynak in January.

With so many top clubs interested in the youngster, it will be interesting to see at what price Leverkusen will agree to sell a player who is yet to make a first team appearance.

Akkaynak’s contract at the BayArena ends in 2019 and with interest generated in the talented midfielder from some of the richest clubs across Europe, Leverkusen might be tempted to sell him during the January transfer window for a decent fee rather than allow him to get into the final year of his contract next season.

With the plethora of options at his disposal, Akkaynak will however need to be very careful with the decision on his next move as his long term career might depend upon the destination he chooses now and it goes without saying that the young man needs regular football to fulfill his potential.

Chelsea have many talented young players in their rank but they tend to allow most of them to leave on loan before selling at a profit. It remains to be seen if the Blues have a similar plan in mind for Akkaynak as well.

As for Barcelona, they are known to give young players a chance to shine in the first team but with the Catalans currently lagging behind rivals Real Madrid, it will be difficult for Akkaynak to immediately earn regular first team football at the Nou Camp.
