Crystal Palace are hoping to finalize the move for Mamadou Sakho before the window closes despite facing stiff competition from Leicester City and West Browmich Albion.
Sakho has been linked with a move away from Liverpool all summer and West Brom were believed to be very close to completing the move for the player earlier in the transfer window.
However, with the Baggies having failed to secure the deal for the Frenchman, it is now believed that Crystal Palace are leading the race for the £30 million rated defender.
Under new manager Frank De Boer, Palace were expected to play a much more possession based style, reminiscent of the Dutch team Ajax Amsterdam.
However, their possession play has been lacking penetration, with the Eagles mostly playing only sideways and backwards, and this has resulted in the South London side failing to score a single goal this season as well as lose all of their opening three matches.
The problem of lack of penetration has been attributed to the absence of a defender capable of playing accurate passes into the midfield and attack.
Therefore, Sakho will be an ideal signing for De Boer, who has an excellent range of passing and in addition, the Frenchman is already popular at Selhurst Park after helping the club avoid relegation while on loan last season.
The Eagles have also been linked with a move for West Ham’s Jose Fonte recently, another player who De Boer believes able to succeed in Palace shirt and one that has already donned the Eagles’ jersey in the past.
Sakho has a rough relationship with Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp, since his failed drug test in July 2016 forced him to miss the final months of that season. An understandably disappointed Klopp was also further angered by the failure of the Frenchman to make it in time for the Reds preseason last season.
Such acts of ill-discipline got the Frenchman frozen out of the Liverpool team and he was later sent on loan to Crystal Palace last term.
It now looks inevitable that the Frenchman will move away from Merseyside this season but which team he will end up joining, might be a question left unanswered until the final hours of the transfer window as along with Palace, the likes of Leicester City and West Brom remain interested in the defender.
