Speaking to BT Sport, Chelsea legend Frank Lampard has gone on to provide an explanation as to why the Blues may have sold Nemanja Matic to Manchester United.
Chelsea recently sold Nemanja Matic to Manchester United for a fee believed to be in the region of around £40million and while many feel that the Blues may have done well in receiving such a sizeable amount on a player close to his 30’s, many have been left baffled as to why they would let such an important figure leave for a rival club.
Chelsea have signed Tiemoue Bakayoko as a potential replacement for Matic but the Frenchman will need to time adapt to life in the Premier League and manager Antonio Conte has recently gone on to admit to his frustrations at losing the 29-year-old.
It still remains to be seen whether or not Chelsea end up regretting the loss of the defensive midfielder but many pundits have gone on to slam the defending Premier League champions for their strange decision and many have gone as far as even questioning the London side’s ability to finish in the top four during the upcoming campaign.
Now club legend Frank Lampard has spoken about Matic’s transfer to United and has gone on to explain why Chelsea may have been ‘forced’ to part with the Serbian international against their will.
Lampard stated that although he was surprised to see Matic leave, he had heard rumors regarding the ex-Benfica star’s potential exit at the end of last summer and believes that it was the player who forced Chelsea’s hand in getting the transfer done.
The legendary midfielder told BT Sport, “I was surprised to see him move to United and maybe there is more to this deal that we realize. I heard whispers at the back end of last season that he wanted to go and even if the club cannot come out and say too much about that, maybe there was an element of that in play here when this deal went through.
“You get the feeling that Chelsea didn’t really want Matic to go, but players can push for a move at times and that is why this deal feels different compared to Petr Cech’s move from Chelsea to Arsenal a couple of years back.
“Petr had done such a lot for the club, Thibaut Courtois had come in and it would have been harsh to stop him moving to Arsenal when he was so settled in London, but this is different.
“Matic was a big player for Chelsea last season and even though they have sign players to replace him, he is going to be missed and possibly just as significantly, he strengthens Manchester United, there is no doubt about that.”
