Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has gone on to provide an explanation as to why he splashed the cash to secure the services of Nemanja Matic this summer.
Manchester United have unsurprisingly splashed the cash once again during the summer transfer window and their biggest splash has come in the form of striker Romelu Lukaku, who has joined the Red Devils from Everton for a whopping £75million.
However, the transfer which shocked many was the £40million acquisition of Nemanja Matic from rivals Chelsea.
While United did pay a premium price for a player who is now 29, there is no doubting the fact that the Serbian international is a quality player and his arrival has significantly improved the United lineup and at the same time, weakened Chelsea’s title winning side.
Many pundits as well as former players have expressed bemusement at Chelsea deciding to sell Matic to United, the manager of Red Devils, Jose Mourinho, is understandably delighted at signing the man he brought back to Stamford Bridge in 2014.
Now speaking ahead of United’s Premier League opener against West Ham United, Mourinho has gone on to explain that he wanted to sign Matic as soon as he arrived to Old Trafford last season and added that he wasted no time whatsoever in landing the 29-year-old this summer after finding out that the midfielder was keen on joining the Red Devils.
Mourinho told Sky Sports, “When I joined Manchester United last year, I thought immediately that we needed a kind of Matic. There are not many, there are just a couple, but I thought that.
“But I was not thinking of it because I always thought I never like to go to players that I think are an impossible mission, and I felt there was no chance.
“Then this season, when I got the call that Matic wants to play for me and for Manchester United, and he can make it happen, I thought he’s the perfect player for me. Not just for his qualities but also for my relationship with him, the way I know him, the way he knows me.”
