Under pressure Crystal Palace manager looking to sign West Ham United’s Jose Fonte

Crystal Palace boss Frank De Boer is reportedly interested in signing Jose Fonte from West Ham as he looks to sort out the Eagles’ backline.

De Boer has come under increasing pressure recently as Crystal Palace have failed to put a single point on the board in their first three games of the season.

The Dutch coach was expected to be bringing in an attacking brand of football to Selhurst Park but with Palace failing to hit the net yet, he has fallen a long way short of the expectations.

The Eagles have been guilty of passing the ball mostly sideways and backwards and this has been attributed to the lack of defenders capable of carrying possession to the midfield areas.

Therefore, De Boer is currently said to be looking to sign a ball playing centre back and as a result, Fonte has been targeted by Palace. Although, Fonte is not quite Franz Beckenbauer, he has proved in the past to be a better passer than the defenders currently at Selhurst Park.

Fonte knows Crystal Palace very well, having previously enjoyed a successful spell between 2007 and 2010 at the South London outfit before making a switch to Southampton and he would surely be welcomed back to the club by the Eagles’ faithful.

During his time at the Saint Mary’s, he impressed everyone with his defensive abilities but was also adept with the ball on his feet. His impressive performances for the Saints saw interest from all across Europe, with even the likes of Manchester United and Juventus fighting for his signature.

Interestingly, he joined Slaven Bilic’s West Ham side in January last season instead but since has seen his performance level plummet. Fonte has made only one appearance for the Hammers so far this season and was an unused substitute during West Ham’s recent 3-0 loss to Newcastle.

With the current state of affairs, it looks like Fonte is certain to leave the Olympic stadium in favor of a move to Crystal Palace and the transfer of the 2016 European champion could prove to be beneficial for every party involved.
