Ronaldinho backs Philippe Coutinho to replace Neymar at Barcelona

Brazilian icon Ronaldinho has stated that Philippe Coutinho is the ideal player to replace Neymar at Barcelona.

In arguably one of the biggest and most shocking transfers of all time, Neymar has decided to turn his back on Barcelona and will now be joining French giants Paris Saint-Germain for a world record fee of around £198million.

The prospective transfer of Neymar to PSG has sent shockwaves around the world and while the move is a huge signal of intent from the French giants, Barcelona are now left with a very tough task of replacing one their most crucial players.

Barring perhaps Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, there are few players in the world that are as good as Neymar and it will certainly be interesting to see who Barcelona now attempt to sign to fill in the void set to be left by the 25-year-old.

Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho has widely been mentioned as one of the targets for Barcelona and legendary attacker for the Blaugrana, Ronaldinho, firmly believes that his former side should look to sign the fleet footed playmaker as a replacement for Neymar.

As quoted by the Daily Mirror, Ronaldinho said, “There are only very few players in the world who can replace Neymar – and I have said that I think Coutinho could play for them.

“He is at a level where he could come and fill the gap left by Neymar – but Liverpool will know his worth and after the fees of this summer it will cost Barcelona.”

The Brazilian icon then went on to speak about Neymar’s move to PSG and having played for both clubs during his career, the 37-year-old explained that he had told the attacker to follow his heart ahead of the move.

He said, “I have played for both clubs and of course Barcelona are the bigger team historically – but both clubs are now at a level where they are competing for the biggest trophies.

“I told him (Neymar) that he had to make the right decision for him. I did not want to advise him either way – I have just told him to follow his heart and hopefully that is what he has done.

“There is no doubt that Barcelona will try and replace Neymar – but the problem they have is that clubs now know their financial position. The fee for Neymar has been made public and opposition clubs will know that Barcelona have all that money – they are not going to let their best players go cheaply.”
