According to reports carried out by the Daily Mirror, Southampton are on the verge of securing the services of Lazio defender Wesley Hoedt.
Virgil van Dijk has made it clear that he wants to leave Southampton this summer and with the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal courting his services; it is no surprise to see the Dutchman eyeing a move to greener pastures.
Surprisingly though, Southampton chief Ralph Krueger recently stated that the Saints will be looking to keep hold of van Dijk despite the defender’s desire to leave and it will now be interesting to see how the story develops.
While Southampton understandably want to keep hold of a quality player such as van Dijk, having an unhappy player in the squad certainly does not help the morale of the team and the Saints will in all probability have to part with their prized asset before the end of the summer transfer window.
Therefore, it would be wise to plan for life after van Dijk and Southampton seem to be doing just that as reports from the Daily Mirror have claimed that the South Coast based outfit are on the verge of signing central defender Wesley Hoedt.
Hoedt is a talented player who is currently plying his trade for Italian side Lazio and the 23-year-old has impressed during his two year spell in Serie A so far.
Southampton have been monitoring Hoedt for a while now after noticing his wonderful promise and the Saints are currently believed to be close to acquiring the services of the Dutch international for a fee believed to be in the region of around £15.4million.
Much like van Dijk, Hoedt is an imposing centre back with numerous attributes on the ball as well and he could easily prove to be a more than capable replacement for his wantaway compatriot at the St. Mary’s Stadium.
