Southampton are eyeing a move for Cedric Soares if Nathaniel Clyne leaves the club during the summer
Clyne was arguably one of the best performing right backs in the Premier League last season and while such a rise to prominence from the defender is a huge boost for Southampton, the downside is that their prized asset is now being courted by a host of top teams.
Recently, Liverpool placed a bid of around £10million for Clyne and although the Saints moved on to reject the offer, it is looking like they will ultimately have to cash in on the 24-year old this summer – especially with Manchester United also very interested.
Nonetheless one thing which Southampton have proven so well last season was that they are capable of replacing their key players without much fuss and it looks like the Saints are already planning a replacement for Clyne in the form of Portuguese right back Cedric Soares.
Soares is a young right back who is currently plying his trade for Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon and is considered one of the most exciting talents to have emerged from Portugal in recent times.
As a result, a move to one of the big leagues in Europe has been seen as a possibility for Soares and according to reports emerging out of Portugal, the 23-year old could well be Premier League bound by joining Southampton.
A fee in the region of around £5million has been touted for Soares and they will look to finance a deal for the defender through the sale of Clyne.
Soares has made nearly 100 appearances for Sporting in his career so far and has also won 3 international caps with the Portuguese national team. Although still fairly inexperienced, the defender could be a risk worth taking for the Saints.
