Manchester United has decided to sell goalkeeper Victor Valdes a mere six months into his stay at the Premier League club. Manager Louis van Gaal was quite clear that there was no room for the Spain international in the club because he did not adhere to the club’s philosophy.
Valdes joined Manchester United as a possible replacement for David de Gea whose contract will come to an end next season. He has had an excellent run with Barcelona, having won La Liga an impressive six times with the club.
However, it now seems that van Gaal will have to make other plans concerning the goalkeeper. The 33-year-old goalkeeper came in from Barcelona on an 18-month contract, but the coach had made it clear from the outset that he would have to work hard to win a permanent place in the first-team.
Things seem to have come to a head between Valdes and van Gaal after the goalkeeper refused to play in the reserves last season. Manchester United expects players to be part of the second team if they cannot fit into the first team for some reason. Valdes’ refusal to toe the team’s line hasn’t gone down well considering that he was given plenty of time to recover from knee surgery before being called on to play.
Van Gaal spoke to the media about the decision to sell Valdes during a news conference in Seattle. The team is currently touring the United States before the season starts. A lot of eyebrows were raised when the Spaniard was omitted from the squad going to the US, but it is clear that he hasn’t been able to take the place of David de Gea.
As far as de Gea is concerned, he has been flirting with Real Madrid, of late, but Manchester United has earlier said that they were holding out for a record fee. Van Gaal has said that he is very happy with de Gea’s performance so far and that the team would only consider bringing a suitable goalkeeper to Old Trafford based upon his plans.
United expects around £30 million for de Gea but Madrid might just be able to get the Spanish goalkeeper for nothing when his contract runs out in 2016. The Red Devils had also offered to swap the goalkeeper for defender Sergio Ramos, but the deal evidently did not work out. As of now, de Gea seems to be well settled at Old Trafford and has also received a fat pay hike.
Van Gaal also spoke about Robin van Persie during his interaction with the media. The Dutchman mentioned that he had a talk with the Dutch striker while they were playing together during the club’s golf day, indicating to him that he would have to look elsewhere for his career prospects after three seasons with the club. The famously ruthless van Gaal decided to let the striker go because he scored only 10 goals the previous season and he has already joined his new club Fenerbahce.
