Inter Milan interested in signing Jose Gimenez this January

Inter Milan are reportedly interested in signing Jose Maria Gimenez from Atletico Madrid after the transfer window reopens in January.

New Inter manager Luciano Spalletti had been linked with a host of center-backs towards the end of the recent summer transfer window as the Italian manager looked to further strengthen his back-line in preparation for a title challenge.

The Nerazzurri had been touted to make moves for the likes of Shkodran Mustafi and Eliaquim Mangala among others, but they were left disappointed at the end after failing to land either of the two aforementioned players before the end of the recent transfer window.

After missing out in the summer, Inter are already said to be drawing up plans for the January transfer window and recent reports suggest that the Italians have identified the Atletico Madrid defender, Jose Maria Gimenez as their main target.

The interest for the Uruguayan was high throughout the summer, with the likes of AS Roma and Juventus keen to land the defender but with Atletico Madrid being banned from making any new signings, it had been made clear that they would not let go of the defender this summer.

Atletico will be relieved of the ban come January though and they might be more open to sell the Uruguayan international, should the right offer arrive. Gimenez is believed to have a release clause of around €65 million and Inter might be tempted to pay the amount to lure the center-back to San Siro.

The 22-year-old will prove to be a huge coup for Inter, should they successfully land the defender in January. Despite his young age, Gimenez has an amazing understanding of the game and this has seen him win the unconditional faith of manager Diego Simeone.

Gimenez is also considered one of the most promising defenders in the world at the moment and Inter would be landing a huge prospect for the present as well as the future if they secure the South American star’s signature this winter.
